Annual Report to the Nation Released
The most recent Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer shows a continuing overall decline in cancer mortality from 1999 to 2016. Published on May 30, the report also includes a review of cancer rates and trends for men and women ages 20–49 that shows lower incidence and death rates for men than women in this age group. The report is jointly issued by NCI, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries, and the American Cancer Society.
Childhood Cancer Data Initiative Announced
The Childhood Cancer Data Initiative (CCDI) is a proposed investment to collect, analyze, and share data to address the burden of cancer in children, adolescents, and young adults. The initiative would support childhood cancer research and make it easier for researchers to learn from each of the approximately 16,000 children and adolescents diagnosed with cancer in the United States each year.
NCI Seeks Input to Help Shape CCDI
In preparation for the CCDI, NCI has launched CancerResearchIdeas, an online platform for the public to submit ideas on how to advance progress against childhood cancer through the sharing of data. And on July 29–31, scientists and leaders in childhood cancer from across the country will gather in Washington, DC, for a scientific planning meeting to discuss the role that the CCDI can play in improving childhood cancer research. Portions of the meeting will be videocast for an unlimited audience, with an opportunity to submit questions and comments.
Childhood Cancers Research Page Updated
NCI’s new Childhood Cancers Research page describes efforts by NCI and its academic and industry partners to develop new, more effective, and safer treatments for childhood cancer.
Rates of Aggressive Uterine Cancer Subtypes Rising
New findings from a study by NCI researchers show that the incidence of aggressive subtypes of uterine cancer in the United States rose rapidly during 2000 to 2015. The findings also reveal racial and ethnic disparities in uterine cancer incidence and survival.
