What started out as an accidental text has blossomed into a heartwarming friendship.
It all started in 2016 when Grandma Wanda Dench, of Arizona, texted then 17-year-old Jamal Hinton, thinking it was her own grandson. She texted him details about their Thanksgiving dinner, not knowing that she was telling a complete stranger.
Hinton texted Dench back saying she had the wrong number and sent a photo of himself. When he jokingly asked if he could still come over for some Thanksgiving food, she replied, “Of course you can. That’s what grandmas do…feed everyone.”
Hinton took Grandma Dench up on her offer and headed to her house for their first Thanksgiving together.
Their story quickly went viral, winning over the hearts of people from all over the world.
They kept the tradition up, and this year was their sixth Thanksgiving spent together.
The only difference is that this was the second year in a row that they spent Thanksgiving without Dench’s beloved husband, Lonnie, who sadly passed away from COVID in April 2020.
In addition to Thanksgiving, they also spend Christmas, birthdays, and many other days together as well.
Their heartwarming story and incredible bond prove that friendship knows no race, age, or gender.
“I’ve changed my view so much on the younger generation,” Dench told NBC 15 News. “And now that I’ve reflected back on all these years, I didn’t change their life, they changed mine”
