Many of us have fond memories of the Girl Scouts. Whether you participated in the organization as a child yourself, or simply enjoyed the yearly joy of those tasty cookies, the influence of the Girl Scouts is prevalent everywhere. This cookie season, the San Bernardino community came together to show just how impactful Girl Scouts can be.
8-year-old Girl Scout Lilly Bumpus was born with cancer. At just three months old, she started adult-form treatment and chemotherapy. This past July, Lilly celebrated 7 years of being cancer-free. Unfortunately, Lilly’s fight isn’t done yet. According to a Facebook post written by her mother, Trish Bauer, Lilly is still struggling with long-term effects of the treatment, which will impact her for the rest of her life. “Lilly is on the ‘escalated spectrum,’” she wrote, “meaning she started having life threatening reactions and side effects while she was still in treatment and now will fight forever.”
Despite the battle Lilly still faces, she remains optimistic and refuses to give up on her dreams. “She does not like somebody telling her something is not possible,” her mom said. “When I told her at the beginning of the season how tough it would be to sell this year, she told me, ‘Nothing is impossible if everybody chose to make it possible.’” And not only did Lilly sell this year, but she broke the national record for most boxes sold in one season!
Lilly sold 32,484 boxes this season, including 5,000 donation boxes that will go to “fellow childhood cancer warriors in the hospitals, to help feed the homeless in our communities and to our deployed troops.” Lilly was both shocked and proud of her incredibly successful season. “I thought, ‘Wow I never knew I could do that,’ she said. “It just meant so much to me to see that huge number. It’s like the biggest number I’ve ever seen.”
