One of GreaterGood’s Signature Programs is providing mammograms for women in need. Providing Mammograms For Women In Need offers life-saving healthcare services to women who cannot afford it.Early detection saves lives, and mammograms are the gold standard in breast cancer detection. If it is caught early enough, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer is a promising 96%.Access to this crucial screening tool should be free and available to every woman who needs it. Yet women all over the world are putting their health at risk due to limited availability for screenings and the cost that comes with it.

In 20 states in the U.S., low-income women can’t get free cancer screening because they’re turned away or put on extensive waiting lists. On top of that, 14 states have slashed their budgets for free cancer screenings. Too many women lack health insurance to cover the full cost of breast cancer screenings, and they can’t afford to pay out-of-pocket.The problem is hardly isolated to the United States, though. In Sierra Leone, there is one mammogram machine in the whole country. And many other countries have limited to no access to mammograms.This is unacceptable.

Death rates from breast cancer have been declining over the years, which is heartening news. Yet breast cancer is the most common cancer in women besides skin cancer, and it is the second leading cause of death from cancer among women worldwide — the first leading cause of death from cancer for Hispanic women.We want to change that.The GreaterGood.org team works with organizations around the world to provide cancer screening services to women in need. One of those organizations is Thinking Pink in Sierra Leone. Over 2,6000 mammograms have been provided so far for low-income women who are uninsured.

Kadija is one of those women. She is a registered nurse and an employee for Thinking Pink.When Kadija felt a lump in her breast, she knew what it could be, thanks to her background at Thinking Pink. She had a lumpectomy, and traveled to Ghana over the course of a year to get chemotherapy and radiation — something that wouldn’t have been possible without free funds from GreaterGood.org. Through Thinking Pink, she also underwent counseling about what to expect.Now her goal is to educate all young women about breast cancer.
