Randi Van Der Sloot was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. After undergoing treatment and radiation that cost her her hair, she beat the cancer much to the joy of her family and students. Now, five years later, she’s been diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer for the second time.

“You never expect to hear these words — especially in a global pandemic: ‘You have cancer, space bar, again,” said Van Der Sloot in an interview with KELO. Her current condition is metastatic, so the cancer is spreading to different parts of her body. But the students at Roosevelt High School won’t let negativity spread.

In honor of their Assistant Choir Director, students of RHS plastered the walls of their campus with messages of encouragement and positivity. It is evident by the outpour of love and support that Van Der Sloot is well appreciated at the school. Vice President of the RHS Cancer Club Morgan Whiting said, “I feel that she just radiates positivity into every room she enters, and if someone has a bad day she does everything she can to make them feel better.”

But the students didn’t stop at the wall of positivity. The RHS Cancer Awareness Club organized a fundraiser for Van Der Sloot, and her family, at the local Chipotle. Those that dine there on the day of the fundraiser, and mention the school’s Cancer Club, will have 33-percent of their meal’s proceeds donated to Van Der Sloot’s family.

“It’s very heartwarming for me to know that she’s got these people: the cancer group, and all the kids, and all the love, gosh, and then the positivity wall, and, all of those things for me… I couldn’t even put into words what that means,” said husband Marty Van Der Sloot.
