When most grooms step up to the altar on their wedding day, they say vows to their wives-to-be. However, Dontez Williams had a few other vows to say, one for each of his two stepdaughters.
Dontez was preparing to marry his long-time girlfriend, Myshella Burton, but it wasn’t just his future wife he wanted to commit to, but his stepdaughters as well.
9-year-old Abigail and 8-year-old Natalie had been in Dontez’s life since they were just one and two years old. He was a father figure to them, but they weren’t his biological children.
Dontez wanted to show his daughters that he planned to commit to them for life and that it didn’t matter if they were “his” or not – he was going to be their father, as long as they were ok with that.

During the wedding, the family was up at the altar and Dontez used the moment to ask his two stepdaughters if he could officially adopt them. He said vows to them, and got down on his knees to be on their level.
The touching moment was shared on his Instagram, and many people found the video to be heartwarming.
In the vows to his daughters, he said, “I never knew you really do become a man when you have children. Having someone to teach, protect and provide for them, discipline them, learn from them and support them. For all of those reasons, you have helped me become a better person. I know that I’m a father figure to you both.”
When sharing the video on Instagram, he said: “Just the thought of me writing the vows for them, it made me want to tear up. When I felt that emotion just thinking about it, I was like, ‘I got to do this. This is the right decision. There’s no ifs, ands or buts about it.”
