To honor our loved ones who have battled breast cancer, many of us do a run, a fundraiser, or volunteer. For one teenager, sharing the fruits of her hard farm work seemed like the best thing to do.

Tori Millirons, a Hahira, Georgia 8th grader, sold her Grand Champion pig at the Lowndes Area Market Hog Show recently. The proceeds – more than $5,100 – were then donated to South Georgia Medical Center Foundation to benefit breast cancer patients the SGMC Pearlman Cancer Center.

Millirons had already decided she wanted to do something good for others if she happened to take the top prize.

She said, “I always said that if I was blessed enough to win the pig show I would donate the proceeds to an organization. I am excited the donation will help people locally in our community.”

The donation was made in memory of her family member Sharon Boykin, who died of breast cancer the night of the hog show.

In a Facebook post after the fact, the SGMC Foundation praised Millirons for her help.

They said, “Thank you so much for your extremely generous donation Tori! You are truly making an impact in our community!”

Millirons has been showing pigs for eight years, is chapter president for the Future Farmers of America (FFA), and is in 4-H.

SW District 4H Program Development Coordinator Melinda Miller said people in the program do learn to care for the community, but Millirons took it a step further.

Miller says, “Lowndes County 4-H’ers learn the value of citizenship and service to our community through a variety of opportunities. Youth give back through their time and resources collectively. However, Tori’s individual gift shows a level of generosity that is above and beyond the norm, and I’m proud of her desire to make a difference with her market hog project. She’s a leader among her peers, and she will continue to impact our community, country and world in great ways.”
